US Diesel Sales Up 25% This Year

Slowly but surely, diesel vehicles are catching on in the U.S.

Sales of diesel cars and SUVs are up 25 percent through the first six months of this year while the overall U.S. car market has increase by 4.2 percent. Clean diesel cars saw the biggest jump in April 2014 with a rise of 60.4 percent in sales compared to April 2013. Through the first six months of 2014, clean diesel sales have consecutively increased each month while surprisingly, hybrid sales have dropped every month except for May.

February 2014 hybrid sales compared to February 2013 was 23.9-percent less and could indicate at a shift in the market as more and more Americans embrace diesel engines. That also doesn’t take into account the additional models that will be releasing in the remainder of the year, giving shoppers a larger variety of diesel vehicles to choose from. California, Texas and Florida led the U.S. with the most registrations of clean diesel and hybrid passenger vehicles.

According to Polk data, there are now a total of seven-million diesel vehicles registered in the U.S.
